To hire offshore developers in India well, decide first how you want to engage them (freelancer, agency, staff augmentation or your own entity), then write a precise role brief, test candidates on real work, fix the overlap hours in writing, and make sure IP assignment is signed before anyone touches your code. Done this way, an Indian developer works as part of your team at a fraction of a local salary. Done carelessly, you lose months to the wrong person.

Why companies hire developers from India

India has one of the largest pools of software developers in the world, most of whom work in English every day and use the same stacks you do: React, Node.js, Python, PHP and Laravel, Java, .NET, Flutter. Senior skills cost noticeably less than in the US, UK, Gulf or Australia, which lets a small team add capacity without matching local salaries.

The time difference is also useful when you plan for it. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and doesn't change for daylight saving. That gives UK and European teams a comfortable afternoon overlap, Gulf teams almost a full shared day, and US teams a short window in their morning that falls in the Indian evening.

The four ways to hire offshore developers in India

Each model suits a different situation. Picking the wrong one is the most common early mistake.

Model How it works Suits Watch out for
Freelancer You contract an individual directly, often via a marketplace Short, well-defined tasks Split attention, disappearing mid-project
Project outsourcing An agency delivers a project to its plan A fixed scope you won't manage daily Less control over who does the work
Staff augmentation A provider vets, contracts and pays a developer who works only for you, under your direction Ongoing product work with your own lead You still have to manage them
Own entity or employer of record You employ people in India directly or through an EOR Teams of five or more planned long-term Payroll, compliance and HR overhead

For most startups and SMBs adding one to five developers, staff augmentation is the practical middle ground. You get a dedicated person and control over their work, while someone else handles contracts, payments and replacement if it doesn't work out. If the work is a single project with a clear scope and nobody on your side has time to manage a developer, project outsourcing is the better fit.

What it costs

Rates in India vary with seniority, stack and the hours you need. As typical market ranges, junior developers through providers often start in single-digit dollars per hour, mid-level developers commonly sit in the mid-teens to thirties, and senior or specialist engineers (AI, DevOps, Salesforce) cost more.

A worked example

A digital agency in Manchester needs a mid-level React developer for client projects. A local hire at their level would cost them a full UK salary plus employer costs and recruitment fees.

Instead, they hire a dedicated developer in India at, say, $20 an hour, full-time. At 160 hours a month, that is $3,200 a month, or $38,400 a year, with no recruitment fee and one invoice. They agree on overlap hours of 9:00 to 13:00 UK time, which is 14:30 to 18:30 IST in winter and 13:30 to 17:30 IST during British Summer Time. The developer joins the agency's morning standup on video, picks up tickets in Jira, and opens pull requests that the agency's senior developer reviews.

The real cost is slightly higher than the invoice. The senior developer spends maybe three hours a week reviewing and unblocking, and the first month is slower while the new hire learns the codebase. Budget for both.

What moves the price:

  • Seniority and specialisation. AI, cloud and enterprise platform skills cost more.
  • Overlap hours. Late Indian evenings for US teams narrow the candidate pool and usually raise the rate.
  • Engagement length. Longer commitments tend to get better rates.
  • Single hire or a team with a lead. A lead adds cost but reduces your management time.

How to vet candidates properly

CVs look alike. How you test candidates matters more.

Write the role brief before you look at anyone. Include the stack, the seniority, two or three examples of tasks they would do in their first month, the overlap hours and the tools they will use. A vague brief attracts vague candidates.

Use a short paid task. Give the shortlisted candidates a task that takes three to five hours and resembles real work: fix a bug in a small repo, build a form with validation, write an API endpoint with tests. Pay for it. You learn more from one real task than from three interviews.

Run a live session. Ask them to walk you through their task code, then make a small change while sharing their screen. You see how they think, how they communicate when stuck, and whether their spoken English works for your team.

Check how they ask questions. The best remote developers ask clarifying questions early instead of guessing. Leave something slightly ambiguous in the task and see what happens.

Contracts, IP and payments

This part is dull and it matters a great deal. Before day one, make sure you have:

  1. A contract that states the hours, overlap, notice period and rate.
  2. An NDA and an IP assignment that transfers ownership of everything they create to your company.
  3. Access granted through your own accounts (GitHub, cloud, Jira), so you can revoke it in minutes.

Payment to an individual contractor in India is usually made by international bank transfer or a service such as Wise, and the contractor handles their own tax and, where applicable, GST compliance on export of services. If you hire through a provider, they handle this and you receive one invoice. If you plan to employ people directly, speak to an employment lawyer or use an employer of record, because Indian labour and tax rules apply.

On data, give your offshore developer only the access they need, keep production customer data out of development environments where you can, and check your obligations under GDPR or other laws in your market. India's DPDP Act also applies to personal data processed in India.

Making the first 90 days work

Most offshore hires that fail do so because of onboarding, not skill. Treat the new developer like a local hire: a written first-week plan, a named person to ask questions, access ready on day one, and a small, real task they can ship in the first few days.

Hold a short one-to-one every week for the first two months. Ask what's slowing them down. Waiting six hours for a reply because of the time difference adds up fast, so make sure questions get answered within the overlap window.

When offshore hiring is not a good fit

Offshore developers need direction. If nobody on your team can set priorities, review code and say whether work is good, an offshore hire will drift, and that is not their fault. In that case, a fixed-price project where the provider owns delivery is safer.

It also fails when the role must be on site, when you need deep overlap with US Pacific hours every day, or when the work is so small and irregular that a full-time person would sit idle.

FAQ

How long does it take to hire an offshore developer from India?

Through a provider, a shortlist typically arrives within one to two weeks, and the hire can start a week or two after you choose. Hiring a freelancer directly can be faster but carries more vetting risk.

Do offshore developers in India work US hours?

Some do, by agreement, but it means working late into the Indian night. A partial overlap of two to four hours is more sustainable and easier to hire for.

Who owns the code an offshore developer writes?

You do, if the contract includes a signed IP assignment in your favour. Without one, ownership can be unclear, so never skip it.
