Google Business Profile: A Complete Setup Guide for Indian Businesses
Google Business Profile setup for Indian businesses, step by step: claiming, verification, categories, address format, photos, reviews and common mistakes.

Google Business Profile setup takes about 30 minutes of form-filling and a few days of waiting for verification. You sign in at Google Business Profile with a Google account you control, search for or add your business, choose the right category, enter your address or service area, verify ownership (usually by a short video), then fill in hours, photos, services and description. The steps are simple. What decides whether customers actually find and call you is the detail you put in after verification.
Before you start: what you need ready
Gathering these first saves you from leaving the profile half-finished:
- A Google account you will keep. Use a business Gmail or Workspace account that the owner controls, never a staff member's personal account or an agency's account.
- Your business name exactly as it appears on your signboard, invoices and GST registration.
- A full address with landmark and PIN code, or the list of areas you serve if customers don't visit you.
- A phone number that someone answers. If your team handles enquiries on WhatsApp, use that number.
- Opening hours, including your weekly off day.
- Ten or more real photos: storefront, interior, team, products or work.
Step-by-step Google Business Profile setup
1. Create or claim the profile
Go to the Google Business Profile page and sign in. Search for your business name. If it already appears (Google often creates listings from public data), claim it. If someone else already manages it, Google lets you request access, and the current owner has a few days to respond.
If it doesn't exist, choose to add a new business.
2. Pick your primary category carefully
The primary category is one of the strongest signals for which searches you appear in. Pick the most specific one that describes your main business: "Dental clinic" rather than "Doctor", "Sweet shop" rather than "Store". You can add up to nine additional categories later for other things you genuinely offer, but don't add categories for services you only provide occasionally.
3. Address or service area
If customers come to you, enter your address. Indian addresses often need extra help: add the building name, floor, nearby landmark and PIN code so Google places the pin correctly. After saving, drag the map pin to your exact entrance if it lands in the wrong spot.
If you visit customers (plumbers, pest control, home tutors, interior designers), set yourself up as a service-area business. You hide your address and list the cities or areas you serve instead. You can't use a virtual office or a co-working address where you don't actually staff a desk.
4. Verify
Google now commonly asks for a video recording. You film a short continuous clip showing your signboard or street, then the inside of the premises, then something that proves you manage the business, such as opening the shop shutter or showing tools of your trade. Some businesses get phone, SMS or email verification instead. Verification can take anywhere from minutes to a few days after review.
Video verification fails most often because the clip doesn't show the business name on signage or doesn't connect the outside to the inside in one take. Plan your route before you hit record.
5. Fill in everything else
After verification, complete:
- Hours and special hours. Add special hours for Diwali, Holi, Eid and other closures, so customers don't turn up to a shutter.
- Description. Up to 750 characters. Say what you do, for whom and where, in plain language. Don't stuff keywords or city names.
- Services or products. List them with short descriptions and, where it makes sense, prices.
- Attributes. Wheelchair access, women-owned, online appointments and so on, where they apply.
- Website and appointment links. Point to your site or booking page.
- Photos. Real photos taken on a phone in good light work better than stock images.
Worked example: a dental clinic in Vijay Nagar, Indore
Say Dr Mehta runs a two-chair dental clinic on the first floor of a commercial building in Vijay Nagar. Her profile currently shows the wrong floor and a disconnected landline.
She claims the listing, sets the primary category to "Dental clinic" and adds "Cosmetic dentist" and "Orthodontist" as secondary because she offers both regularly. She corrects the address to include "First Floor, near the main crossing" and the PIN code, then moves the pin to the building's entrance. She replaces the landline with the WhatsApp number her receptionist answers, adds Sunday as closed, and lists 12 services such as root canal treatment, aligners and teeth cleaning.
Then she asks every patient for a review on their way out, using a short link printed on a card at reception. If she gets five reviews a week, she has around 60 new reviews in three months. Each review that mentions a treatment by name ("got my root canal done here") adds relevance for that search. She replies to every review within two days, including the one three-star complaint about waiting time, which she answers politely with what she has changed.
None of this is clever. It is just complete and consistent, which is what most competing profiles are not.
Reviews: how to get them without breaking the rules
Google's guidelines for representing your business and its review policies are strict. You can ask customers for reviews. You cannot pay for them, offer discounts in exchange, ask only happy customers through a filter, or post reviews from staff and family. Fake or incentivised reviews can be removed, and Google can restrict or suspend the profile.
What works: ask in person at the moment the customer is happy, send the review link on WhatsApp after a completed job, and make it one tap. Reply to every review, good and bad. A calm, specific reply to a bad review often does more for the next reader than the review itself does harm.
Common mistakes Indian businesses make
Adding keywords to the business name. "Sharma Sweets Best Sweet Shop in Indore" breaks Google's guidelines and invites suspension. Use the name on your signboard.
Letting an agency own the profile. Agencies and freelancers should be added as managers. The owner role must stay with you, so you never lose the profile if the relationship ends.
Leaving old chat or website features in place. Google shut down profile chat and its free business.site websites in 2024. If your profile still points customers to either, replace them with your phone, WhatsApp number and real website.
Duplicate listings. Shops that moved or changed names often have two profiles. Mark the old one as permanently closed or ask Google support to merge them.
Setting it up and forgetting it. Update photos and hours, answer questions and add posts for offers or events. An active profile gives customers more reasons to call.
When a Google Business Profile won't help much
A profile is for businesses that serve customers face to face, either at a location or within an area. If you sell only online across India with no physical presence customers can visit and no local service area, you are not eligible, and your effort is better spent on your website and marketplaces. Similarly, a profile can't fix a weak offer: if reviews keep mentioning slow service, the fix is in the shop, not the listing.

FAQ
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a profile costs nothing. Be wary of anyone who calls claiming to be from Google and asks for payment to verify or rank your listing.
Can I set up a profile without a shop?
Yes, as a service-area business, if you visit customers at their homes or offices. You hide your home address and list the areas you serve.
How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
It ranges from a few minutes to several days, depending on the method and whether Google needs a manual review. Video verification is usually reviewed within a few working days.
