Website development cost in India usually falls somewhere between ₹15,000 for a simple template site and ₹25 lakh or more for a custom web application, with most small business websites landing between ₹30,000 and ₹2,00,000. The spread is wide because "a website" can mean five pages on WordPress or a portal with logins, payments and a CRM connection. Below is what each type typically costs, what moves the price, and the running costs people forget.

Typical website development cost in India by type of site

These are typical market ranges in 2026 for work done by Indian freelancers and agencies. They vary by city, by who is building it and by how much is custom. Treat them as a way to sanity-check quotes, not as fixed prices.

Type of site Typical range (excluding GST) Usual timeline
One-page or landing page ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 3 to 10 days
Small business site, 5 to 10 pages, template-based ₹15,000 to ₹75,000 1 to 3 weeks
Business site with custom design ₹60,000 to ₹3,00,000 3 to 6 weeks
Online store (Shopify or WooCommerce) ₹40,000 to ₹5,00,000 2 to 8 weeks
Custom web app or portal (Laravel, Node.js, Next.js) ₹3,00,000 to ₹25,00,000+ 1 to 6 months

The bottom of each range usually means a template, content supplied by you and few changes. The top means custom design, several integrations and someone else writing the copy.

What actually changes the price

The number of pages matters less than most people think. Ten service pages built from one template take little more effort than five. What drives cost is the number of distinct page types and features.

The main factors:

  • Design: adapting a theme is quick. A custom design, drawn in Figma for mobile and desktop and approved before code, takes days of a designer's time.
  • Features: booking calendars, logins, multi-step forms, search and filters each add build and testing time.
  • Integrations: connecting Razorpay, a CRM such as Zoho or HubSpot, WhatsApp Business or your ERP is where estimates most often go wrong.
  • Content: if the agency writes the copy and sources photos, expect that to add a meaningful share to the quote.
  • Languages: a Hindi version of every page is close to a second site's worth of content work.
  • Deadline: a fixed launch date that is close may need more people working in parallel.

There is also a difference in who you hire. A freelancer often charges less because there is no project manager or separate designer. An agency costs more but usually covers design, testing and handover. Neither is automatically better. What matters is whether the person quoting has built something similar and will still answer your calls after launch.

Running costs after launch

The build is a one-time cost. These come every year:

Item Typical yearly cost
Domain (.in or .com) ₹500 to ₹1,500
Shared hosting for a small WordPress site ₹2,000 to ₹8,000
Managed WordPress or cloud hosting ₹10,000 to ₹50,000
Premium theme and plugin licences ₹3,000 to ₹20,000
Shopify subscription Monthly plan fee, check Shopify's current India pricing
Maintenance plan (updates, backups, small edits) ₹12,000 to ₹1,20,000

Payment gateways such as Razorpay charge a percentage per transaction on cards and some other methods, so check the current rate card before you price your products. If your agency is registered for GST, it will add 18% to the invoice for development services. A freelancer below the GST threshold may not.

Skipping maintenance is the most common false saving. WordPress core, themes and plugins need regular updates, and an unpatched site is an easy target. Make sure someone owns that job, even if it is you.

A worked example: a coaching institute in Indore

Say a coaching institute in Bhanwarkuan wants a site that lists its courses, shows batch timings, collects enquiries and takes a ₹500 registration fee online.

A sensible scope would be a home page, an about page, eight course pages from one template, a results page, a contact page and a blog. On WordPress with a refined theme, the build might break down like this:

  • Design adjustments and page layouts: ₹18,000
  • Building the course template and eight course pages: ₹16,000
  • Enquiry form connected to email and WhatsApp: ₹6,000
  • Razorpay payment for registration fee: ₹10,000
  • Speed, basic SEO setup, Google Analytics and Search Console: ₹8,000
  • Testing and training the office staff to edit pages: ₹4,000

That totals ₹62,000, plus ₹11,160 GST from a registered agency, so ₹73,160. Add about ₹6,000 a year for domain and hosting, and a maintenance plan if nobody in-house will handle updates. If the institute later wants student logins, test results and fee instalments, that becomes a web application, and the cost moves into the lakhs.

How to compare quotes without getting burned

Two quotes of ₹40,000 and ₹1,50,000 for "a business website" are often quoting for different things. Ask each one for a written scope with page types, features, integrations, the number of revision rounds and what is excluded.

Then ask four questions. Who owns the domain, hosting account and code? (It should be you.) What happens after launch if something breaks? How many plugins will the site use, and why? Can I see two sites you built that are live today? The answers tell you more than the price.

If you are not sure what you need yet, writing down your goals, pages and must-have features before asking for quotes will make every quote more accurate.

When a cheaper option is the right one

Not every business needs a custom website. If you are a new shop testing demand, a well-filled Google Business Profile and an Instagram page may bring more enquiries for the first year than a ₹1 lakh site. Shopify's own themes are good enough for many first online stores, and paying for custom design before you have sales is often money spent too early.

The reverse is also true. If your website will take bookings, payments or logins, a ₹10,000 quote is almost certainly missing security, testing or proper hosting, and you will pay for that later.

FAQ

Is GST charged on website development in India?

Yes, GST-registered developers and agencies charge 18% on web development services. Ask whether a quote includes or excludes GST before comparing.

How much does a WordPress website cost in India?

A small WordPress business site built on a quality theme typically costs ₹15,000 to ₹75,000, and a custom-designed one ₹60,000 to ₹3,00,000. Plugins, hosting and maintenance are extra each year.

Should I pay the full amount upfront?

No. Fixed-price projects are normally paid in milestones, such as a deposit, a payment after design approval and the balance at launch. Keep the final payment until the site is live on your domain and you hold every login.
